India’s plan to replace 5.56 mm INSAS assault rifle has failed

It’s back to drawing board for the Indian Army after it retracted a tender to supply new rifles to replace the indigenous 5.56 mm INSAS assault rifle.

Observers say the Army’s specifications for the new weapon is too ambitious. Besides firing the 5.56 mm round, the rifle will have to switch to using the 7.62 mm AK-47 round as well.
